What are the elements of a successful grant proposal?
The
success of a grant proposal rests both on the grant writing team and on
the non-profit organization. SP Consultants works closely with the non-profit to provide superior grant writing services based upon the non-profit organization's mission statement and project goals.
Essential questions that must be answered for any successful grant proposal include:
- How well does the proposed project and the mission statement of the organization fit the funder’s
interests?
- What
services does the non-profit provide, what are the strengths of the
Board of Directors and how sound is the financial history of the
organization?
- What is the level of competition for the grant being submitted?
- Funds and Timing: How much money does the
funder have available in this cycle?
- How persuasive is the proposal?
- Has a complete budget narrative of the proposed project detailing how the funds will be utilized been prepared and submitted in accordance with the grant specifications?
Not every grant proposal, regardless of how well written it is, will be funded. It is for this very reason that continual grant writing throughout the year needs to be an integral part of your organization's budget planning.
We have volunteers or staff that write some of our grants, can we hire you and still have our staff write grants?
Yes!
When you contract with SP Consultants we become an extension of your staff at a fraction of the cost of hiring a salaried individual. We can write all of your grants for your organization, or work on more work-intensive ones: You decide the level of participation.
We offer our Grant Research Service Program
as a cost effective way for non-profits to stay abreast of grant opportunities all year long. The Grant Research Service Program is perfect for non-profit organizations that wish to utilize volunteers or staff and contract with a professional grant writing team. If you have additional question about this exceptional economical service, email our team or call 541-975-3434.
It is to the benefit of the
non-profit organization to develop a long-lasting relationship with a
grant writing team. This relationship building over time allows for the
grant writing team to gain first-hand knowledge of the organization and
its mission, thus resulting in higher grant award percentages.
How much do you charge to write a grant proposal?
Our fees
vary based upon the project scope and if the funding source being
submitted to is private funding or State / Federal funding. For
non-profit organizations we offer a discounted rate for grant writing
services.
For a full listing of our fees, refer to the Services and Fees page of our website.
Will you take a percentage of the grant if it is awarded rather than a flat fee?
No!
An arrangement where a grantwriter only gets paid a percentage if funding is received is considered highly unethical. Professional grantwriters require hourly or per
diem compensation, rather than deferred pay contingent on grants received.
The "Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional
Practice" of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives opposes deferred
payment: "Members shall work for a salary or fee, not percentage-based
compensation or a commission. Members shall not pay, seek or accept finder's
fees, commissions or percentage compensation based on charitable contributions
raised, and shall, to the best of their ability, discourage their organizations
from making such payments based on charitable contributions."
How long does it take to write a proposal?
The length of time to research, write and submit a grant proposal is dependent on numerous factors including:- How familiar is the grant writing team is with the non-profit organization?
- How focused and organized is the non-profit organization in the material that they provide to the grant writer?
- What is the depth of the proposal to be submitted? Generally the higher dollar amount of the grant the more intensive the proposal. It is not uncommon for high dollar grant proposals to be 35+ pages in length.
- What are the proposal requirements of funding party?
